The first thing I heard when inquiring about the new guitar hero: complaints about drum kit. There seems to be a lot of sensitivity issues when playing the drums, particularly the red and yellow pads, and Activision has recently confirmed it. In order to save face, they are offering a tuning kit. From a statement in customer support:

We have learned that certain drum controllers manufactured for Guitar Hero World Tour have sensitivity issues. We believe that these controllers are limited to ones in the earlier manufacturing stages. While we believe that this was an isolated manufacturing issue, we are stepping our efforts to randomly test our drum controllers so customers can be assured they work properly. In the event any consumers do experience problems with their drum controllers associated with sensitivity issues, we are offering a drum tuning kit that will enable players to fully optimize their drums.

Since then, they have released a tuning kit. You need a midi-USB cable, and if you do not own one, you can run the gauntlet and hope Activision ships you one. For those of you with a midi-USB cable, you can download the installer here (Windows XP/Vista) and you might need the Drum-tuner Guide here (pdf).

Also there is news that World Tour’s drum-kit is not compatible with Rock Band 2 on the PS3, although it was promised by Sony that it would all be compatible. The XBox and Wii versions are not effected.

Henry Jenkins, the director of comparative studies at MIT, writes an essay covering 8 popular untruths about video gaming. He covers topics including violence and aggression, and it makes for a good arguing point for video game lovers and enthusiasts. The article seems a few years dated, citing 2000-2003 sources, but the points made seem to hold true today.

The overwhelming majority of kids who play do NOT commit antisocial acts. According to a 2001 U.S. Surgeon General’s report, the strongest risk factors for school shootings centered on mental stability and the quality of home life, not media exposure.

What a test of my memory! My very first video game console was the VTech Socrates Educational Video System. It was my first real electronic toy, too, aside from those battery-draining, D-pad with 2-button, cartoon themed games that my mother would have to keep my brother and I quiet.

I received the gift of Socrates around 1989, which probably had a hefty price tag on it at the time. It was awesome: the “keyboard” was removable and could double as a weapon, the controllers could be taken out to give the keyboard a nun-chuck feeling, and all of it was so heavy that nobody would dare steal it. Aside from the joy of the parts of the system, the games weren’t that bad at all. I don’t remember having any extra games for it, but all I cared for was the math. I fondly remember owning the addition sections and guessing on the multiplication questions, pretty much what I do today. Plus, Socrates was a robot, contrary to what my Cultures professor said.

The real question is, what happened to educational video games? What happened to promoting them? Look at this Socrates ad, as an example. Although I have never tinkered with the Leapfrog stuff, I think they saw how much fun I had learning with a digital medium. It doesn’t have to be graphic intensive, either, look at Oregon Trail 1! I learned that bad meat would spoil without salt, and that dysentery means you’re screwed.
